Icelandic Voting
Quick question... Who do you support for President?
“Quick question, who do you support for president?”
Last night here, a rainy evening in Reykjavik, a young man made this simple ask, not far into our conversation.
Both Magnus and Thor were off duty at the restaurant we ate, dining themselves.
This question led to a discussion of their voting process, one day, ID, hand counted. (I also ventured into territory of worldwide cleanup process, etc.)
This was now second instance of someone in the last month, first a German couple in Canada, the husband making a film about manipulating voters beginning in 2008. And now a young Icelandic man in Reykjavik (whose mom and dad attended university in Alabama), who care a lot about how American elections go.
Apparently many in Iceland support Trump as well. How can one not as we learn more and more about what his administration has done and continues to do. Space Force was in the news again (rarely is) with Trump's mention of creating a Space National Guard along with the Iron Dome.
The young Icelandic man's name was Magnus, his friend was Thor. I explained we like the name Thor as it is not only the name of one of our two cats but also the name of one our favorite characters in the show (based on true events?), Stargate SG-1.
Liz said about Thor, the character, He’s an alien.
Our new Icelandic friends laughed. Magnus said, now referring to his friend, He IS an alien!
Magnus and Thor hope to do a road trip from Florida to Alabama to Minnesota. We invited them to stay. 2025 or 2026 will both be good years in America.
